When I was finished trimming it, I tried to poof it up by lightly pulling on the stands and it all fell apart- anyone know what I might’ve done wrong? My guess is that I trimmed too far down but I’m not entirely sure

Backstitch is very useful for adding crochet thread to line the edge of rolled fabric for (Victorian era up to early 20th century era) old fashioned types of fabric + lace doilies/handkerchiefs/table covers etc. Once you hand sew the edge of fabric close, you can either join a knitted or crocheted lace border by attaching the lace to the hand sewn stitches. I read an alternative method in "Lace from the Attic" (1998 book by Nancie Wiseman) where you can directly insert a steel crochet hook into the rolled fabric edge and make a kind of "fabric surface" type of slip stitch (it works well with fine steel hooks such as 0.60 mm/size 70 or smaller crochet thread up to 1.25 mm/size 10 crochet thread). Both methods work well but maybe the crocheted slip stitch method would form a stronger base for attaching lace.

Thank you so much! I'm a grandmother who doesn't sew. I'm hemming my grand baby's pants that his mother cuts off and sends him to preschool in following the Sunday she has him. The problem is that she doesn't dress him back in or returns any clothing he has on when she picks him up late Saturday afternoons. She's taken to cutting off pants and sending him off to school looking like 'Lil Abner. I began hemming those and have him wear those on the day mom takes him. So far. I've hemmed only 3. This past Monday, he came back from preschool with 'Lil Abner pants yet again. I have pants I'd like to hem, so that mom has them for Mondays. I'm 77 and have trouble threading a needle. I could when I had younger eyes and never hzd to use a threader. Thanks for the video--I'm hemming 3 pairs, and more as I can.

When I was little, I never liked this stitch, because it was always on felt or fleece and I didn't like the looks of those fabrics. Because of that, I never learned it. I realized recently that I could do it on ANY fabric, so i decided to come learn it. Thank you!
